Would You Advise To Have A Heparin Injection For Blood Clot Before Flying?

Hello, My question is does my husband need a heparin injection before flying to fiji from australia this Saturday.

My husband had a 120mm blood clot in the lower part of his leg last year in July 2010. After taking Walfarin for three months the clot had only decreased to 80mm. However the vascular doctor has stopped the medication and has said to just stay fit and healthy and it will now sort itself out. Would you advise to have a heparin injection before flying to fiji, and also on the way back eight days later.

Richard's age is 45 and weight is 78kg. Height is approximately 5'8"

Hi, firstly the protocol that we follow at our Vascular Institute is to give Warfarin for six months. After that we advice the patient to have Ecosprin and Folic acid for atleast three to five years. So he should be having these medicines.
As for the flight, it would be safer for him to have LMWH or Enoxaparin injection 60mg before the flights. No harm in having that. And you should consider the above medicines as well.
Take care,
Dr Rishi, New Delhi, India.
