Would Benadryl Help Relive Swollen And Itchy Right Eye?

My husband s right eye has swollen shut after feeling itchy about 4 times in the last 5 months. It is always his right eye and we have not been able to figure out what triggers the reaction. Other than pressure from being swollen he is not in pain and the swelling usually subsides and goes away within 3 days. Any ideas as to what may be causing this reaction? He doesn t particularly want to take anything but would Benedryl help?

Hi. It would sound as though your husband may have conjunctivitis affecting his right eye recurrently. It would be unusual for an allergic reaction just to affect one eye, however, a localised reaction to something would be possible. However, I do think recurrent infection is far more likely. If it is not treated effectively then it will return, as it is very contagious. I would suggest getting checked out by his family doctor when it returns and ask whether a course of chloramphenicol antibiotic eye drops/ointment would be required.
