Worried About Constipation Due To Hydrocodone. Other Choices For Pain Medicine?

I will have knee replacement surgery in two weeks. I have talked with friends who have gone through that surgery and hydrocodone was the pain medicine of choice. I have been told repeatedly about constipation as one of the hardest side-effects from using that pain medication. I am worried that that problem could cause big problems for me. What are other choices for pain meds. and how do you head off the constipation side-effect?

Thanks for using HCM.Narcotic pain killers usually cause constipation. You may need to increase the fibre in your diet and ensure proper water/fluid intake.Use of a stool sftener like Docusate will help soften the stool and prevent constipation.if this alone does not work, addition of a laxative to the stool softener may relieve the constipation.Your doctor can guide you further.
