Will Undertaking Two Operations Increase My Risk For Infection?

Good Day... thank you for taking the time to read my problem

I'm scheduled to go for the surgery on my goiter AND a Sternotomy on the same day... (1 October 2010). Two surgeons will attend... normal surgeon and a thorax surgeon. I have an enlarged goiter (Grey's disease)and abnormal growths on my aorta and one other place. I have a low IgG and my sub classes are low. I am obese. My weight 118kg and I am 1,66m tall, female and 47. The specialist physisian said his only concern is my low IgG. I have already lost 5,5kg for the operation. I'm also on glucophase for my sugar (2x per day 850). It is stable. We have monitored my sugar for the last two weeks, seven times a day. Average sugar: 7-9 My concern is this:

1. Should this not be two seperate operations?

2. Having two operations will increase my risk for infection?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your first question planning two separate operations will be more problematic as the risks of anesthesia in your case will be doubled, moreover, the mental stress level on two separate occasions will be more as compared to one time. After sedating you, everything will be fine both the surgeons will do their task one by one and manage you in a single attempt of anesthesia so it is a better choice that you undergo these surgeries in a single anesthesia.

Moreover, the risk of infection with low IgG is there but your doctors have the solution too, IgG is available in market, which can be given to you if you need and also a good cover of antibiotic will be given to you so the risk of infection can be minimized this way.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maryum
