Will There Be A Safe Pregnancy With A Mirena Coil Inside?

Hi,my wife is pregnant with a marena coil she is six weeks gone and we have had a scan and the small sack housing the the baby is in between the coil on the outside. we dont know what the chances are of having a healthy baby or a full term pregnancy. i am worried that if we go through with the pregnancy she could miss carry late in to the pregnency or the baby could be born with disibillities.

Hello, and I hope I can answer your question today.

Removing the Mirena, if it is possible- is best for the pregnancy if the doctor can get it out. In the first trimester removing the cool can sometimes cause bleeding or even miscarriage, but it will be much worse if you wait. If it is too high in the uterus to remove, the plastic can get stuck in the uterus or placenta. As long as it doesn't press on the baby there shouldn't be any risk of birth defects but your wife will need to be followed closely with ultrasounds so monitor the coil closely.

I wish you best of luck with the pregnancy and that my advice was helpful.

Take care, Dr. Brown
