Will The Intake Of Salmetarol And Fluticasone Lead To Obesity?

Hello sir, . I am 22year old male and I am taking salmetarol and fluticasone for inhalation as per the treatment of bronchial asthma. I am taking these drugs since I was 5 yrs old. As I grew I noticed my face has become little round, broad chest, heavy neck and I even gained weight . It might be due to the steroids I consume. What should I do about this problem. I take the medicine in every 2-3 days. Is there any less harmfull replacement available?? Plz do reply. Thank you! :)

Hello welcome to HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
The treatment regimen prescribed to you is ideal in the treatment of asthma but the dosage may be adjusted and if you have no further episodes of asthma your doctor can gradually omit this inhaler and then you can use as an when required. Weigh gain is due to Fluticasone component which is a steroid.
My advice to you is -

1. Ask your doctor to make least possible dose of Fluticasone component in your inhaler then you continue for 2-3 months with the same component twice or thrice weekly. Once you noticed no episodes occur during that period gradually that combination or simple Asthalin can be given as an when required.

2.As you are steroid dependent now it will take time actually to taper the dose.

3.If you have seasonal asthma then you can start inhaler one month prior to season regularly.

4.Regular breathing exercise and yoga will help to reduce the incidence of acute attacks.

Thank you.
Have a nice day.
