Will The IQ Of The Baby Be Affected After Mother Having Thyroid Problems During Pregnancy?

Hi Dr,

My daughter in law is 8 weeks pregnant. In the routine test her TSH was 128.7. Then her free T3 & T4 was done & they were 1.79 & 0.47 respectively. Dr has put her on Thyronorm 100.
We are concerned that the IQ of the baby will be affected. Pl help.

Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

In the setting of untreated subclinical hypothyroidism (meaning the patient does not know that they have a problem), there is an effect on the IQ scores of those children. This is a well known fact. But this risk is virtually eliminated once her thyroid is normalized, and the diagnosis in your daughter's case is early enough that this should not be a significant issue. She needs the same labs checked every 6 weeks throughout the pregnancy. Also, she should ask about labs related to thyroid auto-antibodies, which if positive, change the way the fetus is followed.

I hope that this helps and good luck!
