Will Taking Venaflaxine For Anxiety Cause Delayed Period?

I just started taking 150mgER of venaflaxine for my depression/anxiety. That was the dose I started out on. I started them a week after my period which was March 7th. It is now April 10th and I still haven t started. My periods before always started on the 7th and my boobs would get really tender a week before which hasn t even happened yet. I am really scared and wondering if this medication could be the cause of my late start? I would just go get a pregnancy test but too scared to right now. I am not on birth control and my husband and I have had unprotected sex for the past 5yrs with him pulling out which I know doesn t always work. Just wanted to know if my meds is a possible reason for being late??

Hi,

I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern. Venlafaxine is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). Yes, menstrual changes or irregular menstrual periods can be a rare side effect of venlafaxine. Anyway in your case (you had unprotected sex and you are not on birth control pills). I suggest to do a serum beta HCG test to rule out pregnancy as this is a more sensitive test than the urine pregnancy test.

Also, you should do an ultrasound to look for a local cause of the amenorrhoea. For this reason, i suggest to consult a gynecologist in your area as it is not possible to diagnose online.

Hope I have clarified your doubts. If you have any further queries, please feel free to ask. I would be happy to help.

Regards,
Dr. Bledar Hysenbelli
