Will Taking Plan B The Next Day After Having Unprotected Sex Cause Pregnancy?

I am a 41 year old female with extremely normal and regular periods. My last period was December 13-18. I had unprotected sex on the 21st, but took Plan B the next day. I am not due for next period until mid January, however, I am having minor menstrual like cramps, which I never get during ovulation. Usually ovulation doesn't cause any problems for me. Could I be pregnant?

Hi. Welcome to HCM forum. Plan B tablets contain the medicine levonorgestrel, a female hormone that prevents ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). This medication also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. U have taken this tablet with in 72 hours after sex but u need to take second dose 12 hours after the first dose.The timing of these doses is very important for this medication to be effective. But u have not taken second dose i think. Its better to get examined by a doctor if your next period is late by 1 week or so. So wait and watch. But remember plan B is is not intended for use as a routine form of birth control and should not be used in this manner. Its better to use condom. Regards
