Will Radioactive Iodine Therapy Help Lose Weight When Diagnosed With Graves' Disease?

I was diagnosed with Graves disease in late 2011. I have been on Carbimazole 10mgs since and despite eating a sensible diet and exercising regularly I have gained 10kgs. My Tsh levels have been stable since I started medication. If I had radioactive iodine therapy, do you think it would help me to control my weight?

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1.As grave's Disease is an autoimmune disease thus you should consult an Endocrinologist for following parameters:

i. As use of Radioactive iodine [RAI] is associated with hypothyroidism thus ask for the best type and dose of thyroxine: [T3,T4, or natural dessicated thyroid]

ii. As in grave's disease there is abundance of antibodies thus destroying it with iodine therapy will have no effect since antibodies are produced by white cells, and in some patients the use of RAI may actually increase the antibodies and worsen or increase thyroid eye disease which may be painful and disfiguring

iii. In a study published in German Article: Nuklearmedizin. 2002 Feb;41(1):47-51.: An initially distinct increase of body weight after RIA of hyperthyroidism is mainly a compensation of pre therapeutic weight loss due to hyperthyroidism, and if adequate euthyroid adjustment is done after therapy then RIA is not responsible for later weight gain.
