Will Nocturia Lead To Kidney Disorder?

Hi doc, I have a problem of frequent urination during night. I used to wake up in the middle of the night , with serious pain around my upper belly , and I think I am creating a serious problem on my Kidney. How should I prevent this frequent urination during night period. Should I not drink after 6:00pm or is there any solution? Thank you! M. Kokeb

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Frequent night time urination may be a sign of excess fluid intake including alcohol, diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, hypercalcemia chronic kidney disease, diuretics, and cardiac failure, bladder over activity, benign prostatic hyperplasia and UTI. It needs to be investigated properly. Pain in upper belly may be due to urinary tract problem or due to retention of urine in urinary bladder. Treatment will depend upon cause.
Advice
1.     Investigations – routine examination of urine, blood sugar (F & PP), ultrasound whole abdomen, serum sodium and potassium, serum calcium, midstream urine culture and microscopy
2.     Restrict fluids in the evening especially coffee, caffeinated beverages, and alcohol
3.     Take afternoon naps
4.     Sleep with elevated legs to prevent fluid accumulation
5.     Wear compression stockings to prevent fluid accumulation
If above measures do not help you then consult urologist for further diagnosis and treatment.
Thanks!!
