Will It Be Too Long To Have An Abortion After 9 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

Hi I am a 27 year old unmarried woman and have recently found out I am 8 weeks pregnant.

At the moment I am based in an Islamic country and have no choice but to under go an abortion and need to come back to chennai to do so as the laws in this country do not allow abortion and require an unmarried woman to be jailed if found pregnant.

I plan to fly back home to chennai for an abortion and want to know if it would it be too late to do so one week from now? How long would an MTP take and how soon can I fly back to Dubai?

Appreciate the help.

Hi and welcome to health care magic.

I understand your concern. Abortions are legal in India upto 20 weeks but the grounds on which they are performed after 12 weeks are stringent. So it is advisable to get an MTP before 12 weeks as it is much more safe and quick procedure. The complications are high after 12 weeks. So I suggest that you get it done as soon as possible before 12 weeks preferably by 10 weeks.

The procedure that is quick and safe is dilatation and evacuation and it is a one day procedure where you can be admitted in the morning and discharged by evening or at the most next day. Please get it done by a qualified doctor [an MD Gynec] and at a good hospital.

The recovery time depends upon individual person but at the most it is 48 hours for uncomplicated procedures upto 10 weeks. You may take rest for a week if you like. By then you will be perfectly fit to return back.

Please use contraception to avoid such a procedure in future as every abortion is associated with some risk. It is best to use condoms as they also prevent against sexually transmitted diseases.

So please be safe and do not worry. It will not be late.
I am always here to answer your queries.
