Will I Contract HIV After Staying With A HIV Infected Person ?

In the case of H.I.V discorded couples how does it happen Am 38 years old and have been married for 11 years. My wife was diagnosed with H.I.V aids 2years ago. She says she has not been with another man during the 11 years we have been together. I have 2 girls 11 and 6 years they both tested negative. Am worried i might contract H.I.V from her. We are still sexually active. We have been using condoms though occassionally i cant control my self and insist not to use a condom. I usually check my status every 3 months and am still negative. How does this happen ? Can somebody stay with a positive person all this while have children and not get infected ?

Hi Mathew, Welcome to HealthcareMagic Forum.
Most people who have HIV-AIDS have no symptoms for several years after getting infected. Some people will have flu symptoms within a few months after getting infected. The only way to find out if you have HIV is to get an HIV test. It can detect antibodies to HIV within 3-6 months after infection. More than 95% of people who have HIV will test positive within 3 months after getting infected. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months for someone to test positive.
First confirm it whether your wife is actually infected with HIV as there is no way you can escape from getting infected if you don't use condom while having sex with a infected person. Get a repeat HIV testing done in her.
Good Luck and wish you Good Health, Take Care.
