Why The Injection Site Turned Red, Swollen And Hot?

I received an injection in my gluteal region seven days ago, three days later I developed flu-like symptoms and temperature of 101.2. The injection site became red, swollen, and hot. MD ordered Keflex 500mg PO BID for 7 days. There is obvious induration and I'm wondering if I should apply heat or cold to the area.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, Welcome to Health care magic forum.
As you describe, it is an abscess formation, due to the deposit of the injection, and the reaction of the tissues to it.
I advise you to consult a surgeon for diagnosis. You may need to have incision and drainage.Dressing is to be done with the plug kept and changed daily.
I usually prescribe to my patient with such symptoms, ofloxacin, ornidzole, serratio peptidase, and diclofenac.
Wishing for a quick and complete recovery. Thank you.
