Why My Biopsies Were Taken?

Hi i did Gastroscopy today . Findings: mild oesophagitis at og junction at 40 cm. biopsies taken from distal oesophagus. Stomach: normal examination. Gastric biopsies taken. Duodenum: Normal examination . Conclucion: Mild oesophagitis. I am concern why the biopsies were taken

Thanks for writing in.

There is mild inflammation at the lower end of esophagus (food pipe). It is usual to take a small bit of tissue from the problem areas and study them under the microscope to know why the changes have occurred and if it is something serious which needs a different form of treatment. Once the result come clean it is confirmed that it might have been due to the erosions in lower esophagus and no further detailed investigations are necessary.
