Why Is Thyroid Ultrasound To Look For Spongy Tissue Done?

I have been seeing an endocrinologist for 4 years for hypothyroidism. After 4 years of not getting my meds dialed in, I sought a second opinion. The new endo thinks I may not have hypothyroidism and wants to do a thyroid ultrasound to look for spongy tissue. What does this mean?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concern.

If you are in doubt whether you are having hypothyroidism or not we will do additional tests to check you are at risk of hypothyroidism. In my practice I do antithyroid antibodies and ultrasound. In ultrasound you can look at the structure of thyroid - which is altered or "spongy" in hypothyroidism. If it is normal your Endo will be more confident in decreasing or stopping your thyroid medications.
