Why Is My Tongue Numb After 3 Days Of Arthroscopy Knee Surgery?

i had arthroscopy knee surgery thursday, today is sunday. After coming out of surgery I noticed my tongue being quite numb thought it was probably from being tube. But as of today the numbness is still there it is the entire end of my tongue and the left side. It is very strange and bothersome, what can I do?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. It seems that while inserting the tube in your throat while under general anesthesia, the nerve that supplies the back part of the tongue and the left side (Lingual Nerve) has been damaged. It can sometimes happen as a complication of the general anesthesia.

You can discuss this problem with the surgeon that has operated you. If that indeed is the case, then you do not need any treatment for that. It might take few weeks to few months to regenerate the nerve fibers and the sensation will return itself. You can also consult a neurosurgeon who can advise you regarding the situation.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish you recover soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
