Why Is My Son Sick With Nausea And Loss Of Apetite?

My son has been sick for 4 weeks with incredible nausea, gripey stomach, feeling of fullness and loss of apetite. He has lost 11kg and has been to two doctors and a specialist had numerous tests done (blood, faeces, ultasound , endoscopy) which have revealed nothing. He had suspected salmonella poisoning at beginning of year which was treated with a very strong antibiotic. He is currently on another strong antibiotic (prescribed by his specialist) just in case it is another bug or bacteria that is lingering in his system plus a 3 day intense worm tablet dosing. We thought he was improving but today he feels like he has regressed. The next step is a CT scan ordered by the specialist if the antibiotics and worm tablets don t work within the 7 day period. I am very concerned that nothing is working. He has missed weeks of school and it seems this mystery illness is ruining his life.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your son, being sick for 4 weeks, nausea, pain in stomach, bloating, loss of appetite and losing 11 lbs in just 4 weeks; all investigations normal, 2 strong antibiotics and anti-worm tablets not helped in spite of 2 Doctors, suspected to be started as Salmonella infection at the beginning of the year, missed school.
As per the history you have provided, this looks to be a serious issue, loosing 11 lbs just in 4 weeks along with other symptoms have to be taken very seriously.
I would advise you the following:
- Get him admitted to the hospital
- Proper clinical evaluation and examination by a clinician is a must.
- Additional investigations:
Blood culture and sensitivity.
CT scan of the Abdomen and chest to see for the lymph nodes, tuberculosis.
To get the proper diagnosis and proper treatment would help him the best.
I find this answer helpful
