Why Is An MRI Done?

My daughter just had an ex-ray for pain in lower leg near ankle, Dr. said she saw some extra bone growth and is sending her for an MRI. What is done for this?
My daughter is an 18 year old runner, so she is worried about not been able to run.
Thanks
