Why Is Trileptal Prescribed?

I work in a homeless shelter. We just got a new resident who was discharged from a mental health facility. She is refusing to take Trileptal because she read the info from the pharmacy that said it is for seizures. I need help to explain that it can be given for other reasons.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Trileptal contains 'oxcarbazepine', which is an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic medication. It works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures and hence, it is used either alone or with other medications to treat partial seizures.
There is some evidence for oxcarbazepine as a mood-stabilizing agent and thus, it can be used as add-on therapy for bipolar disorder as well.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
Best wishes.
