Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

HbSAG is a test for Hepatitis B exposure. It has nothing to do with pregnancy. It is a test done on every routine pregnancy screen, because in women with hepatitis, special medicine needs to be given to the baby at birth to prevent disease.

It sounds like you had one false-positive test during your second pregnancy (as the confirmatory test and all the others were negative) so you do not seem to have Hepatitis B. HbC is Hepatitis core antigen, which will only be positive normally if the HbSAG is positive, so it makes sense that this test was also negative.

So in summary, HbSAG and HBC tests are not affected by pregnancy- they just do the test while you are pregnant because the disease can affect a newborn baby. I suggest you get the vaccine against Hepatitis B if possible after the pregnancy so you will be immune as this is standard of care in most Western countries for all children and adults.

I hope this answered your question and best wishes,

Dr. Brown
