Why Has Sodium Bicarbonate Been Prescribed?

I am taking nifedipine for high blood pressure, and have been placed on a low sodium, low potassium diet. I have also been taking 3 650mg tabs of sodium bicarbonate daily, at the doctor's direction. Now I learn that this med actually increase the amount of body sodium. Why would be give me that after putting me on the diet?
