Why Does The Person Stop Breathing After Supplying With Oxygen?
A patient was admitted to the hospital with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. His PO2 was 55 and PCO2 was 65. A new resident orders 54% oxygen via the venturi mask. One hour later, after the oxygen was placed, the nurse finds the patient with no respiration or pulse. She calls for a Code Blue and begins CPR. Explain why the patient stopped breathing.
In COPD PATIENTS DUE air tapping and the underlying disease, their baseline saturation remains at around 90 and po2 stays around 70 with high pco2 than normsl individuals. This low o2 gives central drive for respiration. So when we give this patient high flow oxygen this central drive got diminished and respiration slows down. Which causes co2 retention and this further deteriorate consciousness and patient goes in CO2 narcosis. So patient becomes unconscious and stop taking breaths.
