Why Does My Son Start To Cry & Scream After Eating?

Hi, my son is 4 weeks old. Almost every time after he eats, within about 20 minutes he begins crying--screaming rather-excessively. He will stop for brief moments, and then start right back up. He will even begin falling asleep, and he wakes up out of his sleep to cry-as if he is in pain. He burps well, he is not spitting up, he has been pooing fine. My doctor said this is normal, but I do not feel that this crying is normal. Does this sound like colic? Or do you think it could be something more serious?

Thanks for asking the question at HealthCareMagic. Before trying to answer your question, let me ask you whether the baby receives breast milk only or any other supplemental formula feed. Breast milk is the best food for a baby and formula feeds cannot be an alternative. The only reason for giving formula feeds is inadequacy of breast milk. Formula milk is cow milk based and difficult to digest. As a result, they may give rise of abdominal colic and therefore the child starts crying after taking the feeds. It does not seem to be anything other than colic.
If possible, try maximising breast feeding or giving expressed breast milk which you can also store in a refrigerator and give after bringing it to room temperature.
Giving colicaid drops or similar drops should give the baby some relief and reduce the crying.

Hope that helps. Feel free to revert back in case of further queries if any.
