Why Does My Husband's Gum Hurt After Taking Penicillin For Tonsillitis?

My husband contracted tonsillities this Sunday, having chills and fever of 102. First night he complain of severe tooth ache, needs to apply some alcohol to numb the gum. He went to see his PCP, get some penicillin for 7 days. Fever goes away, but the gum is still very sensitive and painful. Cannot drink or eat hot or cold food. Is this normal or he should go back to see any doctor? He always has good dental hygiene, but do have several dental implant. The gum doesn't seem infected or in red though. He has been using peroxide plus salt water to rinse his mouth, anything to be aware or alarm of? Thank you for your time.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As per your complain although he has Tonsillitis and fever which can be due to either bacterial or Viral Infection and it can be treated by taking antibiotics like Penicillin, doing warm saline gargles, throat lozenges, avoiding hot and spicy foods..

Fever can be controlled taking Tylenol..

The another part of your problem is severe toothache and gum sensitivity to hot and cold indicate that there is deep decay in tooth which has involved the nerve leading to inflammation and pain.
You should consult a Dentist and get evaluated and get x Ray of the tooth done and if tooth can be saved ROOT CANAL TREATMENT can be done for relief..

In case if tooth cannot be saved Extraction has to be done.
This has to be followed by antibiotics and painkillers..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
