Why Do Patient Undergo Lumbar Puncture?

I am 76 years old and a week after I was born I apparently looked like alittle wax doll. I was taken to the London Hospital where I stayed for 3 months (1939) and had 12 blood transfusions. I also had a lumbar punch. I don t know why I would have had a lumbar punch and what exactly is it?Many thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Lumbar puncture is mainly done for diagnostic indications. They draw CSF sample and send it for laboratory analysis to detect infection or malignancy.
If it is done for therapeutic indications, then there must be infusion of drugs for purpose of treatment.
