Why Do I Need Colonoscopy At This Time?

I have just been notified by my provider that Ihave had an abnormal pap smear and may require a colonoscopy. is this most likely due to an STD or something more serious. I am not able to readily see this or another provider and am trying to get some idea of what I am dealing with.

Hello and welcome to HCM
Probably what your health care provider said you may require is not a colonoscopy, its a colposcopy.
A colposcopy is a procedure usually done by the Gynecologist where they look at the vulva, vagina and cervix with a special magnifying glass, to get a better look and find lesions that are not seen with the naked eye. It is usually indicated when a pap smear is abnormal.
The meaning of an abnormal pap smear is that you have abnormal cells in your cervix (this does not mean cancer), however if your doctor is recommending a colposcopy it is probable that you have been detected with a human papillary virus infection in more than one pap smear, or atypical cells (cells that have changes that can evolve to cervical cancer).
The important thing is that pap smear and colposcopy both are done to detect precancerous lesions and cervical cancer in early stages when it can be curable, so if you have any changes in your pap smear that need a colposcopy, it is important that you go on with the procedure.
