Which Is The Better Medicine In Between Oxycontin And Fentanyl?

I am a 59 year old male with multiple lumbar disc issue including severe bilateral foraminal narrowing at L5-S1. I am under the care of a spine specialist and have done several epidurals which have not worked as expected. I am currently on multiple drugs. I may need to go on around the clock pain medication. Is there any advantage of one over the other such as oxycontin versus fentanyl?

Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

Regarding your question, I would explain that both these drugs belong to the same pharmacological class (opioids)and this is why they have the same adverse effects.

There is not too much difference between them.

But, I would recommend trying gabapentine or pregabaline in stead of these drugs. These anti-epileptic drugs can be really helpful in chronic back pain.
An antidepressant can also be helpful in the management of chronic back pain. All these drugs do not cause addiction and tolerance like opioids.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!
Kind regards, Dr. Aida
