Which Age Group Is Suitable For Colon Cancer Screening?

I was having a conversation with my friend about colon cancer and we were trying to figure out when we should be tested. I am a female age 43. My mom had her first test done at age 75 and they found cancer. She died at age 80. When should I be tested?

Colon cancer screening should be done beginning at age 50 as both men and women at average risk for developing colon cancer
Tests that find polyps and cancer
• Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years
• Colonoscopy every 10 years
Double-contrast barium enema every 5 years
• CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) every 5 years
Tests that mainly find cancer
Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) every year
• Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) every year
• Stool DNA test

Colonoscopy should be done if test results are positive.
