When Will I Experience Menopausal Symptoms After Surgery For Uterine Fibroid/ovarian Cysts?

I am 19 days post surgery. I had everything removed as a result of uterine fibroids and two ovarian cysts. I am wondering when these menopausal symptoms might show up, if at all. Neither my mother or her mother, had menopausal symptoms. Does this mean that I might escape this usual curse ? Or can theses symptoms show up months from now? If I am not experiencing menopausal symptoms is it advisable that still get some sort of HRT? I ve not investigated any HRT options. Thank you, Karin Maas

Hi Karin and welcome,

You are lucky as there are no menopausal symptoms. Not every women gets them so it may be possible that you may not get them at all. There is no time limit as to when they appear as sometimes the hormones that come from body fat are enough to meet our needs and so the symptoms may never show up.

HRT is helpful in menopausal symptoms as well as preventing osteoporosis or thinning of bones. So if there are no symptoms, get a bone mineral density scan. If it is Ok, you may not need any drugs soon. Long term use of HRT also has some adverse effects.
Just use calcium every day to prevent bone loss along with weight bearing exercises after you recover completely. Discuss this with your treating gynecologist and she will guide you.

Wish you a happy recovery.
Hope this satisfies your query.
