When Should One Take Physical Therapy After A Back Injury?

Hi and thank you. I had a fall in the house and fell on my lower right side. I went to see my GP and she diagnosed me with soft tissue injury on my back after examining me. She sent me to xrays at the hospital she s associated with. The xrays showed no broken bones so she put me on entire bedrest with vicatin every 6 hours and meloxicam 15 mg pils -once a day. I ve been following this procedure for one week and now she wants me to have phycical therapy. I can hardly walk and my husband has to do everything for me. Each step I take holding on to my husband s elbows is excruciating pain. I have no trouble getting out of bed as long as I keep my feet together and have a potty chair and ease into bed myself. As long as my feet are close together I feel no pain and repeating, taking one step at time holding onto my husband causes excrutiating pain. Thank you so very much for your perusual of my letter. I know I m not ready for physical therapy and perhaps with your recommendation I should see an excellent orthopedic doctor at York Hospital, Maine. With great appreciation of your perusal of my letter. Thank you again so very much!

Hi,

All the studies show it is best to have physical therapy at the earliest and to have a lot of it. I cannot say in your particular case, but generally, this is true. There can be undiagnosed back problems that might change this. Mostly this is true whether or not there is a disk problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman
