When Should Tetanus Vaccination Be Taken After An Injury?

I just cut my calf on some rusty barbed wire one hour ago. I am relatively sure that the tetanus vaccinations are up to date but wonder if I should get a shot at an after-hours clinic tonight just to be safe or if I would be OK to wait until the morning and call my doctor. I am a 53-year-old male. Thanks

Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.

It should be taken within 24 hours following the injury.
If you have definitely received five doses of the tetanus vaccine, you are fully vaccinated and don’t need a booster dose.

However, if you are not sure how many doses you have received, you may need a booster dose after an injury that has cut your skin in the calf.

It is administered within 24 hours after the injury.
Hope this answers your query.
