When Can Liver Enzymes Test Be Done After Weaning Off Alcohol?

i have been drinking nightly about 2-3 drinks of vodka. i am a woman 55 with lots of stress in the past 2 years. unfortunately i turned to alcohol to help me sleep. didnt always help. i have not had a drink for 3weeks now.

i am a nurse by trade and want to have my liver enzymes done, but, i work with my physician and fear she will have me terminated. do you know how long i should wait before getting enymes drawn?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi, thanks for your query. Before specifically answering your question, I would also like to enquire about your sleeping difficulties. Do you have initiation as well as sleep maintaining difficulties? Do you feel tired after getting up in morning? Over last month or so have you always felt sad/anxious, jittery about future, how will you rate your energy levels in last month or so..usual or less than before? If answers to some or all these questions are affirmative, then you should approach a Psychiatrist for detailed evaluation of your problem. My impression is Alcohol intake is your own attempt to medicate yourself out of your problem & not the root cause of your ill health. Depending upon your daily intake in past few months, Liver enzymes can remain elevated for a variable duration. Hence considering your period of sobriety of 3 weeks, I would advice you to wait for 1week more before proceeding with liver function tests. Good luck
