What Treatment Is Suggested For Diarrhea And Vomiting?

Had very bad vomiting night before last, started at 2am. By 10am, diarrhea, too. Took Imodium, slowed down the diarrhea, only two bathroom trips last night. Had a banana this morning, followed by soda, because I felt better. Diarrhea has returned, now accompanied by painful bloating and lots of gas. Took more Imodium (now at 6 capsules in less than 36 hours), but now there s no relief. Also, have started dry heaving again. Drinking lots of water. Ate nothing yesterday, had a banana this morning and a tiny amount of rice this evening. Putting anything but water in my system makes me nauseous, and I don t want to start throwing up again. Thought it was food poisoning, not so sure now. No fever. Please help.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
1) Your symptoms are suggestive of gastroenteritis i.e. non-specific infection on alimentary tract due to unhygienic food.
2) In this condition inner layer of alimentary tract (stomach and small intestine) become inflamed (redness and swelling)
3) Stomach inflammation cause vomiting
4) Inflammation of small intestine cause less absorption of nutrient from food and secretion of water back into lumen of intestine from intestine wall. This produce secretory type diarrhea in gastroenteritis.
5) You should do stool examination first
6) In treatment - Drink ORS powder mixed water to prevent electrolyte loss from vomiting and diarrhea, take antibiotics, medicines for pain, medicines for acidity
7) Take Tab Imodium only if you have stool frequency more than 6-7 and never take this tablet more than two in a day.
