What To Do For Sleeping Disorder?

Hello Dr Samuel N. Grief. I hope you not in a state of continuous grief. (small pun). I do have a quick answer, and I work in mostly in biologics with APis improving patients with MS. So back to my question, I am very motivated, a real go getter, i exercise and and I m very active. problem is I cant stay asleep and I am up every 1 to 3 hours, with my mind racing. I take 1/2 tablet Ambien CR every other day with a glass of wine, that usually does the tick, but lately I am feeling some sort of respiratory distress usually at night when I lie down. Im thinking it allergies but feel this drug: ms be taking its toll on my heart. Cant find any literature and Seeing a pulmonologist is a few weeks out? Should i be concerned?

Hello! Waking up from sleep due to respiratory distress, is something to be really concerned about. First of all it is important to rule out all organic causes, like obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome in individuals who are obese and short necked (pickwikian syndrome). Secondly it is important rule out ongoing stress due to which you may be depressed and to rule out other possible anxiety disorders. If all the above is safely ruled out, then we might be dealing with primary insomnia, for which sleep hygiene techniques can help. As of now it is important to consult a pulmonologist at the earliest.
