What Should Be The Normal Tsh Level?

Hi,

My name is Pooja. My husband was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in Dec'10 with TSH level 611. He was put on medications than with 150 mcg dose for 3 months, but than his levels reduced drastically so his dose was further reduced to 125 mcg for 3 mths. We contacted new physician aft all this in Aug'11...He was lil skeptical taking TSH level as 611 so asked to stop meds for 4 wks & get TSH checked. This time (sep'11) reports came as >150. We are worried with all this up - down in reports. What according to u is the level of TSH we shd consider as danger level n contact endocrinologist (as suggested by our present physician)

Dear patient,

The number itself for TSH is not so important to correlate with the severeity of illness, it is pretty clear that he is hyopthyroid and he needs lifetime medication. The most important thing will be to gradually achieve and maintain a TSH between 0.5 and 5, with the dose that is able to achieve that. Usually, if TSH is going in the right direction gradually, there is no need to change the dose.

Hope this helps, wish you the best,
