Hi. I m 36 weeks pregnant pregnant with my first child and I m not sure if I m leaking amniotic fluid or urine. I stood up to go take a shower today, sneezed, and fluid started to rush down my legs. Twice. Should I go to the hospital even though I feel no pain?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi I understand your query. Leaking of amniotic fluid can be differentiated from urination by the fact that leaking appears in a gush after coughing. Your problem seems to be leaking .You should rush to hospital even if you don't have pain. Before that- - Lie down flat in bed with leg end of your bed raised to 6-9 inches, this reduces leaking, dry labor, cord prolapse. If possible make a call to doctor /nurse for home visit. They can come & assess weather head of the baby is fixed . Transport to hospital should be in lying posture only( by an ambulance) to avoid certain complications. - Don't be panic, be relaxed. - Many a times with bed rest / certain medications leaking can be stopped to allow the fetus to gain weight./ In uncontrolled leaking, when bay is well developed delivery can be induced/ LSCS done as per need. Take care, Thanks.
