What Is Ventricular Fibrillation?

Our 10 year old granddaughter passed out after swim practice one morning this summer(did not eat breakfast before practice)...she was taken to ER by squad. There was a slight irreg ht rhythm; doc said don t worry. He recommended a followup with cardiologist, which they did. About a week later she vomited after practice. Yesterday she felt lightheaded at school in am-had eaten graham cracker for breakfast. The cardiologist had recommended having more salt in diet, more fluids, more potassium. There is a stress test scheduled, but I had never heard of a problem like this-especially in children. What is the prognosis? Her other grandmother had severe electrical problems with her heart. I am an RN, and took care of her on a coronary stepdown unit 15 years ago. I m not sure if there were implanted defibrillators then, but she would go into V-tach, and would require going through the entire ACLS protocol to the last medication-I can t remember it- to stop the ventricular fibrillation. I am concerned about our granddaughter. Lynne YYYY@YYYY

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello! Thank you for asking on HCM! Seems that your granddaughter has completely different medical issue from your grandmother. Life threatening arrhythmia almost always need an existing myocardial substrate to occur. Some cardiology tests like cardiac ultrasound, 24 to 48 ambulatory ECG monitoring, stress test, and if necessary additional special tests may investigate any existing abnormal myocardial substrate. As her doctor is trying to relax you, probably he has already ruled out some predisposing pro-arrhythmia conditions, like pre-exitation syndromes and any organic heart diseases. I suggest for the moment your granddaughter to stop participating on competitive sports as long as her conditions become clarified.
Hope to have been helpful to you. Greetings! Dr. Iliri
