What Is The Window Period For HIV Test?

Dear doctor,

In have a question About detecting p24.

I had a duo test for p24 and antibodies after exactly 24 days.

The result was negative.

Since on the internet the information is not clear about the detection period of p24, some say after 10 days, others after 2-3 weeks.

Therfore i am wondering if it possible for the p24 to be undetectable untill 24 days?

In other words, why is the duo test only considered to be conclusive after 28 days?

And is p24 always produced and detected when infected when the antibodies are not there yet?

Thank you in advance for your answer and good work!

Regards j from Holland

Hello J.

The duo test can be considered helpful even before 28 days, but it is considered to be conclusive only after 28 days because the antibodies are produced and detectable after this period, which is when the test is advised to be conducted and most accurate.

Yes p24 can be detected much earlier than the antibodies, but is not present immediately after contact with a HIV-infected source.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
