I have a child at college that had a throat infection brought him home and my ped gave him amoxicillin 500mg for 5 days. Strep test was negative. Throat infection went away somewhat and then came back days after amoxicillin. PA he saw at Indiana University Health in Indy gave him a course of Zithromax and said it was upper respiratory . He has hypotropic tonsils since he was a child and now tonight he says that his jaw hurts and the side of his face. He seems to thinks that he has an abscess in his tonsil. The one side hurts bad and the other not so bad. Last 2 days he has been able to eat and get food past his tonsils. A major concern for a mother with child at college. He had this 16 months ago and went away with treatment of Clindamycin and got relief in 4 days of taking medication.
An abscess would be accompanied by high fever; more likely he has an ulcer in the throat. Let him finish the antibiotic course and also try gargling with Disprin or warm saline several times a day; eating soft and bland foods at frequent intervals would also help.
