What Is The Treatment For Sharp Pain In Chest?

my daughter, Caucasian, age 45, married, vegetarian, relatively good health (neither smokes, drinks alcohol or abuses drugs). She has been losing weight in last few months (about 125 now from 140+, probably has undiagnosed GERD, but Hx of ulcer). Because of GI problems, she was on a more liquid diet in past two months as solid food would cause her to vomit.
About 10 - 12 days ago a sharp pain in the lower right chest developed. She noticed her ribs showing and a slight depression beneath her right breast. Other members of family have had flu-like illnesses in past two weeks. She had 102F temp and was similarly ill but never had the same respiratory symptoms that the others had... no cough. Last week she finally was seen by a physician, had x-rays, blood drawn have no results), was Dx with atelectasis R lower lobe and Rx Zithromax prophylaxis for possible pneumonia.
Is there a possibility that the former may be an underlying cause of the latter?

Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Atelectesis is partial collapse of part of lung.
It is mainly due to retained secretions in the bronchus.
And I section is the most common cause for secretions.
So , her current condition can be due to spread of infection from the family members.
Treatment of atelectesis is
1. Vigorous chest physiotherapy and deep breathing exercise for removal of secretions.
2. Mucolytic and expectorant drugs to clear secretions.
3. Antibiotics to treat infection.
Get done repeat chest x ray after 7-10 days and if atelectesis is still there then get done bronchoscopic treatment for atelectesis.
Don't worry, she will be alright.
