What Is The Treatment For Severe Shoulder Pain?

wife gradually lost use in left arm at shoulder joint ( 1 year). has had 2 operations on neck ( from the front) to repair nerve and spine stenois problems, was told this would be good chance for pinched nerve to rehab and gain use of left arm again. 6 months later and still on use of left arm @ shoulder joint. Can move hand and elbow ok but will not work @ shoulder joint. Her MRI shows she needs lower back surgery too. Please give us hope and who does she need to see ( what specialist ) Thanx , and look forward for any guidance you can offer us

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
Dear Sir,

Thank you for your posting your query at healthcaremagic.com.

I advise her to move her shoulder as much as she can(with in pain free limit). Physiotherapy treatment will help her in gaining her range of motion and muscle power.

Apart from that she can do lot of good exercises at home:
1. Hanging circumduction
Begin by holding a light weight, such as a can of beans, while bending over and allowing your arm to just hang freely. Then, sway your body in a gentle circle (as shown in red), so that the weighted arm starts to move in a circle also (shown in blue). Be careful to allow the arm to “hang” at all times, and do not use the arm to move in circles. Perform the exercise for 1 minute, then rotate the other way around.
2. Wall Crawl:
Begin by facing a wall, placing the fingers of one hand on the wall at around mid-chest height. Don’t stand too far back.
Slowly crawl your fingers up the wall, while you begin to turn away from the wall. Pause if it becomes painful or difficult.
Finish when you either cannot go any higher with your hand, or when you have turned out parallel to the wall with your body.
Then slowly crawl your way back down the wall, while simultaneously turning back inwards to face the wall.
***Remember to go slowly and pause if you get uncomfortable. Use the wall for support.

Hot water fermentation around shoulder can help in reducing pain and soreness post exercises.

She can consult a near by doctor too find out at what level the impingement through MRI.

Please write back to me if you need any further information.

Best wishes,

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Dr. Sudhir Kumar 's  Response
Hello,Thanks for your query. After going through your query I came to know that your wife got operation for some neck problem .After that I think she developed frozen shoulder of left side as her wrist and elbow are OK. She needs mobilization exercises of left shoulder and analgesics so that she can do exercises. You need to visit orthopedic surgeon for this and lower back problem and to exclude other causes. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it. I do hope that you have found something helpful. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries
