Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I wake up feeling very nervous and have been having feelings like it's never going to go away or I'm never going to feel myself again. I have no appetite, diarrhea, and just want to feel myself again. My GP prescribed citalopram 20 mg which I took for 3 days and it made things terribly worse. I stopped taking it 3 days ago and still have the nervousness..like I'm just not going to be myself again. What is wrong with me?
For most antidepressant drugs (such as Citalopram) the side effects appear first and most of them slowly go away. The beneficial effect may take upto three weeks to appear. Therefore, you should continue to take these medicines over a longer period continuously. If you don't tolerate Citalopam well, there are several other options. Sometimes, a patient doesn't tolerate one antidepressant but is comfortable with another antidepressant. You may go back to your GP or you may see a psychiatrist who is an expert in diagnosing and treating anxiety and depression. Hope this answer is helpful.
