What Is The Treatment For Ankle Sprain?

Hi dr. Samuel, I sprained my ankle walking on an uneven surface. My foot turned on its side (left ankle, foot turned in). There was immediate pain in my ankle and eventually subsided. My ankle has minor swelling (the sprain took place 3 weeks ago). For the most part, my ankle doesn t hurt however if I put heels on and walk my ankle begins to hurt; when I flex my foot downward, the ankle hurts. When I wear flat and sneakers it s fine. Two weeks after the sprain I went to my pcp and she examined me; she recommended X-rays. She told me there was no broken bones of fractures ( she though I might have suffered a stress fracture) she recommended me to see a podiatrist which I will see on Monday. Any thoughts regarding the pain when my foot is flexed downward I.e. When wearing heels? Thank you!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
I think that you have sustained a ankle ligament injury and synovitis causing pain on planter flexion. As there is no fracture present then I would suggest you to apply splint to ankle. You can get ready made splint or plaster of paris can also be applied. It should be kept for 2 weeks at least as ligament healing will take some time in healing so it will heal in this amount of time.
My other suggestion is that you should not put weight over this foot and also keep it elevated over a pillow so that swelling should not progressed any further. If your pain does not improve and stays same then I would recommend you to get MRI of the ankle joint, if there is osteochondral injury to talus or any bad ligament injury that can be cured by arthroscopy.
