What Is The Success Rate For ACL Reconstruction And Does Glucosamine Help?

Hi, While playing football i had a small tear like sound inside my knee, i couldn't continue the game. The next day i could feel my bone rub and rough sound. But after sometime it disappeared. I could find my knee swollen. After few days i went for MRI and the doctor says its a ACL tear. Now its more than a month and i don't have any pain and can walk, climb the stairs freely. I have tried running, but i should be able to run. My question is how long would it take for ACL reconstruction? How much is the possiblility of a successfull operation. I feel better day by day and confused if i should go for surgery. I can bend by knee completely, sit down knee folded.

Also, would like to know if glucosamine helps in this process. I have just started using glucosamine sport cream and tablets to help my recovery process.

Thank you in advance for your kind advise..

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us,

I have studied your case with diligence.

It is very common that one who is in sports activity has recurrent knee soft tissue injury. This in mainly because of microtrauma, previous injury weakens the joint and repeated injury while playing sports.
Acl reconstruction has good results and you can go for it.

Since you want to join sports again I will recommend you to go for arthroscopic ACL reconstruction again, graft for ACL can be used from other leg, use of endobutton will give good results.
At young age if you don’t operate for ACL then progression of knee arthritis will be rapid as your knee is not mechanically stable.

You need to do proper physiotherapy protocol before and after surgery to strengthen your quadriceps and hamstring muscles.

Knee support like knee cap or hinged knee brace will be helpful,
Glucosamine may not have any role here.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care.
