What is the prognosis for stage 4 liver disease? My husband has cirrhosis and has had one perentesis two years ago and fluid build up this month that went away with diuretics. He continues to drink a pint +/- of alcohol. His kidney are between stage 3 and stage 4, but seem to go up and down depending on the liver. He sleeps a lot and has no appetite . From my research I think the prognosis is a number of months, 1 or 2 years max. He also has diabetes. Please be direct with me. I know, I think, he s slipping away...
Cirrhosis is an irreversible liver cell damage. So the prognosis is very poor. The other co existing co morbid illness like renal disease and diabetes increases the morbidity.
So in this stage alcohol aggravates the disease condition. Nowadays there are advanced treatment options like liver transplantation which may help patients like your husband.
