What Is The Prognosis For Lung Cancer With Metastasis?

My father has cancer that has started in his lungs, now gone to his stomach, his liver, skeletal, etc..he chose no treatment...He is 74...what might we expect as far as his body is concerned? Will things just stop working all at once and he will die? He's a lifelong smoker, never been sick a day in his life until now...May 2010 chest X-ray was clean, this may, he's covered in cancer. He is already on a lot of pain- killers and I think Morphine..seems pretty comfortable.

Hello! Around 40% of lung cancer is discovered in stage 4 (extensively spread).
Life expectancy at 5 yrs from discovery (in stage 4) is less than 10%.Around 50% of patients pass away in 8 months from discovery(which means 50% survive at 8 months). The mode of passing away is unpredictable in individual cases but generally one sees a gradual decline rather than an abrupt end. Though one may debate the issue of refusal of treatment on an academic basis I personally admire
the courage of the human being in face of such odds.
