Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is The Possible Interaction Between Evista And Citalopram?
I was recommended to take tomoxifen for breast cancer prevention after lumpectomy and radiation to treat DCIS. However, I take citalopram and understand that can cause cardiac problems and interfere with blocking estrogen receptor. I am postmenapausal and have osteoporosis which has been resistant to treatment and am now having prolia shots. I really don't want to stop citalopram. Effexor did not work for me in the past. Would Evista be aa good option, ie., not have negative interaction with citalopram?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Tamoxifen is one of commonly used drug in oestrogen receptor positive breast cancer. The drug is metabolised by CYP2D6 into an active metabolite if we consider pharmacology. Citalopram is known to cause inhibition of this enzyme and may reduce the effectiveness of this drug. But the interactions are mild and if we consider SSRIs then Citalopram is safest if given with Tamoxifen. But if we consider antidepressants then Venlafaxine would be safest and the drug has minimal interactions with this drug. The drug would have least interactions. But yes even if you take Evista with Citalopram even then there would be no risk. Consult your doctor before starting the drugs.
