What Is The Physical Impact Of Bulimia?

my daughter has had bulemia for twelve years, she is now 24. She has not been able to commit to any therapy. We are of course very concerned about the physical impact on her body. Tonight she has phoned to say she is not feeling well, passing lots of urine but not drinking more than usual. She is extremely underweight, the doctor says she has no fat on her body.

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

I understand that you are very concerned about your daughters problems. Now, eating disorders, like Bulimia have a significant impact on physical health. If untreated, there can be several physical health complications. Some of the common ones are dehydration, kidney problems, liver problems, heart problems, digestive problems, tooth decay, gum disease, menstrual irregularities, etc.

Since you have mentioned that she is extremely underweight and is not taking adequate fluids also, she is at risk of dehydration, salt imbalances, and sometimes, even kidney problems. If she is not co-operative for out patient therapy, you can consider a period of hospitalization.

Wish you all the best.
