Hi,

Welcome to HCM. I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

If your hypothyroidism is lasting for more than 2 years, that means your thyroid is permanently under active. The treatment for it is replacement of thyroid hormones.

Your thyroid is not producing enough thyroxine as it is permanently damaged. We cannot medically improve the thyroid function. But we can completely REPLACE the thyroid hormone that is needed for our body.

By thyroxine supplementation we are doing exactly the same. So it will stop the problems due to the disease, but will never cure the disease. That means you have to be on continuous medications probably life long.

Additional tests that you can do to see if your thyroid is permanently damaged are:

1. Ultrasound of thyroid - thyroid structure will be altered
2. Anti thyroid antibodies - will be high

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
